A local court on Monday awarded life imprisonment to Harpreet Singh, a resident of Mehsampur village near Phillaur, for murdering his wife Rajwinder Kaur. The district and sessions judge Raj Shekhar Attri also imposed Rs 5,000 fine on him.

In a police complaint, Rajwinder's father Jarnail Singh, a resident of Piplawala in Hoshiarpur, in February 2013 had alleged that Harpreet was hooked to drugs and used to harass his daughter by demanding money for consuming drugs.

He said his daughter was married to Harpreet Singh five years ago and the couple had two sons.

He further alleged that on February 13, 2013, he received a call from Mehsampur village that his son-in-law had strangulated Rajwinder to death. When he reached the spot, Rajwinder’s body was lying on the floor in a room, he claimed.

He called the police and took the body to the civil hospital for post-mortem examination. After recording his statement, the Phillaur police registered a case under sections 302 (murder) against Harpreet and arrested him.
