Photojournalist killed after pothole causes bike crash in Jalandhar

Tarun Shammi, a photojournalist with Hindi daily Dainik Bhaskar, died in the hospital in the early hours of Monday of injuries caused by a road mishap on Saturday night.
He had fallen from his motorbike after it got stuck in a pothole near HMV College. A resident of Gurdev Nagar locality, he is survived by his mother, wife and two children.
The family delayed the cremation in protest against the municipal corporation, and the print media association demanded a government job for his family members from the government. The media fraternity also blamed the MC for the accident as it has failed to remove potholes from various areas of the city.
Later in the evening, expressing deep grief over the death, Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh announced Rs 5 lakh as financial aid for his family.
He also directed the principal secretary (local bodies) to seek a report from the authorities concerned about the incident and to fix responsibility over the MC’s failure to maintain the road in proper condition even after spending crores of rupees, a spokesperson said.
