Apna ghar abuse case

In a chilling statement in the Apna Ghar sexual abuse case before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special court here, a 28-year-old victim, who is witness in the case, revealed how physically challenged girls were raped before her eyes at the shelter home in Rohtak.

The victim, who is herself physically challenged, narrated before the court that she witnessed two rapes being committed by Jai Bhagwan, son-in-law of caretaker Jaswanti Devi. Both the victims were physically challenged. She added that one of the victims got pregnant but Jaswanti got her abortion done. Driver Satish, who is employed with Apna Ghar, raped two girls in her presence, said the witness before the CBI court on Thursday.

The witness had stayed in Apna Ghar for three years. She was two-month pregnant at that time and had a daughter too. She told the court that her daughter was separated from her and she used to be tortured whenever she asked to meet her. When she delivered a baby boy, Jaswanti denied food and milk to her and the child died.

She said that when she told the caretaker about the death, Jaswanti and her daughter went to Chandigarh and returned late in the night after more than 14 hours. All this while, she continued to cuddle the child’s body. After returning, Jaswanti disposed of the body, she alleged.

The witness said that Jaswanti also sold one of the infants of an inmate and when the mother used to cry for her baby, she used to be beaten up. Once the caretaker inserted scissors in her private parts, the witnessed said, adding that the mother even lost her mental balance.

The witness said that Jaswanti used to remove all her clothes during a massage and also used to force three other inmates to remove their clothes. She alleged that the caretaker had a sexual relationship with one of the inmates.

The witness said that Jaswanti used to send girls to houses for work. She cited two examples where an inmate was sent to work at Jaswanti daughter Simmi’s in-laws house and two inmates were sent to work at policemen’s houses, but they never returned.

In another allegation, the witness told the court that foreigners used to visit Apna Ghar and Jaswanti used to make the girls stand naked in front of them for photographs.

“Despite lengthy cross-examination, the witness supported the case of prosecution. She identified all accused in the case. The next date of hearing has been fixed for August 5,” said CBI counsel DS Chawla.

However, Jaswanti’s counsel Vishal Garg Narwana said the CBI was tutoring the witnesses. “My client is innocent,” he said.
