A pickup truck loaded with meat — suspected to be beef — hidden under vegetables overturned after hitting a Mahindra Scorpio on national highway-1 near Jalandhar bypass chowk in the wee hours on Friday.
Vegetables and beef scattered on the road after the collision. Passers-by informed the police, who seized the truck and the meat. Police have registered a case under Section 8 (1) and 9 of the Prohibition of Cow Slaughter Act against unidentified pickup driver, who fled from the spot.
Salem Tabri station house officer (SHO) Jatinder Singh said, “Mohinder Singh (45), who was driving the SUV — that had collided with the truck — also fled after dropping all five passengers on the spot. He was later found dead in his car near Ladhowal. Police have sent his body to civil hospital for the postmortem examination. Police suspect that he died due to cardiac arrest.”
Singh said, “Later, city-based scribe Bharat Munjal, who had hired Mohinder’s taxi from Manimahesh in Himachal to Ludhiana, called up police to file a complaint.”
“Munjal told police that he had gone to pay obeisance at Manimahesh with his mother Santosh Munjal and friends Amit Kumar, Sonu and Vinod,” the SHO said.
His friend Amit told police that as they reached near Jalandhar Bypass Chowk, the driver took a wrong turn and in the meantime a speeding pickup truck hit them from the rear.
The impact of collision was so high that Bharat tossed out of the vehicle and fell on the road. He suffered injuries on his head and legs, while rest of the occupants of the SUV are safe.
“Amit informed police that after the incident the pickup truck driver fled from the spot. Following this, their taxi driver also fled leaving all of them on the road,” the SHO said. “Later, police informed them that Mohinder was found dead near Ladhowal.”
SHO Jatinder Kumar said, “It is suspected that the pickup truck driver used to smuggle beef by hiding it under vegetables. Police will arrest the accused soon. Police have sent the samples of meat to confirm whether it is beef.”
