Miscreants targeted yet another ATM (automated teller machine) of Punjab National Bank (PNB), this time in Mukerian and looted cash worth lakhs of rupees.
Bank authorities failed to give the exact loss but informed that `24 lakh was added to the machine on Friday and Rs 50,000 on Saturday.
The ATM had been cut open with a gas cutter. The accused sprayed the CCTV camera and the ATM door glass with a chemical to block the view before going ahead with the loot.
The incident is said to have occurred around 3.45 am but was detected after dawn. Bank officials said they could not tell the exact figures as the miscreants struck on Sunday, a bank holiday, and they would have to check up withdrawal figures from the online system.
ASP Nanak Singh said that finger prints from the ATM kiosk had been taken and investigations launched. Earlier in December, cash worth `23 lakh was looted in a single night from two ATMs of PNB in Hoshiarpur district. In June, `8.84 lakh were looted from a PNB ATM in Sham Churasi area in the district.
Despite several strikes, the PNB authorities are yet to put in place a surveillance mechanism to prevent such incidents.
