Police and drug peddlers' exchange fire in Amritsar ;two arrested

A police team from Jalandhar rural police and a gang of drugs peddlers exchanged fire near Jandiala Guru in Amritsar district on Wednesday leaving one cop injured.

The police was however able to nab two of the gang members and recovered one kg heroin, two revolvers and two cartridges from them.

SP (detective), rural, Rajinder Singh said that Kartarpur police had got information that a gang of four miscreants identified as Charanjit Singh, Gurjit Singh and Surjit Singh alias Sheeto all three from Tarn Taran district and Kashmir Singh from Amritsar district were in the area for supplying drugs.

Kartarpur SHO Inderjit Singh told that at the tip off, police team had put up a naka on national Highway I, to nab the persons. Seeing the naka the peddlers who were coming in a silver colour Maruti Suzuki Alto turned back.

"When we chased them, they turned towards Jandiala Guru, where their car driver lost control and rammed into cattle alongside the road. Meanwhile, we reached the spot and on seeing us zeroing in they started firing. We retaliated," he added.

The police was successful in nabbing Charanjit Singh and Gurjit Singh while their accomplices escaped from the spot.

Shiv Sharma one of the cops involved in the operation was injured, the SHO said.

A case in connection with the encounter has been registered at Jandiala Guru police station while case under NDPS act has been registered at Kartarpur police station.

He also said that Kashmir Singh, one of the gang members who fled the spot, was a terminated police man who was posted at Punjab armed police (PAP), headquarters at Jalandhar.

There are many cases registered against the accused across the state, he informed, adding they have already begun operations to nab the absconding two members of the gang.

He said police were interrogating the accused to know about the possible hideouts of their other accomplices and to get information about the drugs racket in the area.
