JALANDHAR: Furious with his wife over going to pay obeisance alone at the ongoing Sodal fair, a husband allegedly set her on fire at his house in Shiv Nagar near Nagra here on Tuesday morning. The victim, Kulwinder Kaur (32), sustained 90 percent burns and was admitted to trauma ward of the civil hospital.

Initially, when the victim was brought to the hospital, her husband Jagjit Singh (38) told the police that his wife had poured kerosene oil on herself after an argument with him.

Assistant commissioner of police (north), Amneet Kondal, along with station house officer (SHO), Balbir Singh, rushed to the spot and started investigations.

During her statement recorded before the judicial magistrate (first class), Gursher Singh, in the burns ward, the victim alleged that her mother-in-law Gurshenda (50) poured kerosene oil on her and her husband Jagjit lit a matchbox stick and set her on fire.

The victim said she went to pay obeisance at Sodal Temple alone during the ongoing fair and Jagjit was angry with her and beat her after which he set her on fire in connivance with Gurshenda.

Kondal said a case under various sections of the IPC, including section 307 (attempt to murder) has been registered against the accused on the basis of the victim’s statement and they have been arrested. The husband and wife have two children, Rajvir (7) and Manpreet (3).
