Police arrest two, bust 'betting racket'

Police here on Monday claimed to have busted a gang of bookies with the arrest of two persons from a hotel in Sector 70 here.

Ashwini Kumar and Vinod Kumar, both residents of Fazilka in Punjab, were arrested from Hotel Sunshine on Sunday night and have been booked for allegedly accepting bets on the final match of the T20 domestic tournament played between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.

The two were produced before a court on Monday and remanded in two-day police custody.

In a press release issued on Monday, SAS Nagarsenior superintendent of police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the arrest was made on a tip-off.

Matour police led by station house officer Naveen Pal Singh raided the hotel at around 10 pm on Sunday and arrested the two. Four mobile phones and other related documents were seized from them. However, the police did not recover any money from the accused. Bhullar said they hoped to make more recoveries in the coming days.

During interrogation, the accused have reportedly revealed five more persons allegedly involved in the betting racket. They are: Vicky Batra, Gully Mahajan, Laddo Popli, Lara Mahajan and Sonu Handa, also residents of Fazilka
Matour police SHO Naveen Pal Singh said teams had been sent to arrest them.
