The local police on Saturday claimed to have busted an inter-state gang of car thieves that was involved in several cases of stolen vehicles.
The police have also recovered stolen cars worth Rs 32 lakh from the accused, who have been identified as Satish Vajpayee and Shaleshbhai Patel, residents of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat respectively.
Superintendent of police Jaskiranjit Singh Teja said that on the basis of a tip-off Satish was arrested while he was on his way in a stolen SUV, having registration number RJ 14UE 1908, near Chotti Baradari in Patiala.
“The gang was involved in the several auto theft cases in other states also. After stealing the cars from Punjab and Haryana, the accused used to sell them in Gujarat, Mumbai and Rajasthan with the help of fake documents,” Teja said.
On the basis of Satish’s interrogation, the police recovered two other stolen SUVs, bearing fake registration numbers ‘PB 11AL 2435’ and ‘PB 11AE 1668’ respectively.
“Satish also revealed that the mastermind of the gang was a man named Shalesh, who planned the thefts besides helping in forging documents for the vehicles,” he added.
The police teams have launched a manhunt to nab Shalesh.
“We are suspecting involvement of more people as dozens of cases have been registered against the accused at different police stations in Punjab and Haryana,” the police said.
