Police here on Wednesday filed the chargesheet in connection with the fatal acid attack on Barnala woman Harpreet Kaur on December 7.

In the chargesheet filed in the court of chief judicial magistrate (CJM) Ranjit Kumar, police have named main accused Amitpal Kaur Dimpy, her paramour Parvinder Singh and four others. Twenty days after the attack, the victim had died on December 27, 2013, after battling for her life in Mumbai, to where she was airlifted from Ludhiana for better treatment.

The chargesheet says that Amitpal had promised `10 lakh to Parvinder if he threw acid on Harpreet's face. The attack had generated country-wide debate on the easy availability of acid in the market and increasing attacks on women. The case is scheduled to be heard on February 17.

Harpreet Kaur (22) had come to a saloon at Sarabha Nagar on December 7 to get ready for her marriage when she was attacked with acid by the accused. After being treated at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), the victim was shifted to the National Burns Centre in Mumbai.

Inspector Harbhajan Singh of Sarabha Nagar police station, who is the investigating officer in the case, said the chargesheet was filed as per the FIR lodged against the accused. The court on Wednesday ordered the police to provide a copy of the chargesheet to the accused. During the next hearing, the case will be sent to a sessions judge as the CJM cannot hear a case of murder. Sunpreet Singh of Bakshiwala village, Jaspreet Singh and Rakesh Kumar of Amloh and Gurtej Singh of Patiala are the others named in the charge sheet.

A tale of ill-directed vendetta
Amitpal Kaur and Taranjit Singh, elder brother of Harpreet Kaur's fiancé Harpreet Singh, had got divorced around a year ago. Soon after, Taranjit had solemnised his second marriage with an NRI. It is learnt that following the divorce, Amitpal had pledged not to allow any girl to marry her ex-husband's brother.

Police said that when Amitpal came to know that her former brother-in-law was going to get married, she decided to take revenge against her former in-laws. She hatched a conspiracy involving her paramour and others. She had committed to pay Rs 10 lakh to her paramour, Parvinder Singh of Bakshiwala
village (Patiala district), for the acid attack and had paid `1.5 lakh as the first instalment.
The others arrested by the Ludhiana police for helping Parvinder are Sunpreet Singh of Bakshiwala village, Jaspreet Singh and Rakesh Kumar of Amloh and Gurtej Singh of Patiala.
In the acid attack, two salon beauticians and another bride had also suffered burn injuries. They are reported to be safe now. Two days after the attack, police had recovered the car used in the crime.

Missed deadline
On December 27, 2013, when the victim had died in Mumbai, police commissioner Nirmal Singh Dhillon had said that the police would present the challan in the Ludhiana acid attack within a week. However, the chargesheet was missed several deadlines and has been filed almost two months after the incident.
