A day after a woman's body was found in the Baba Deep Singh Colony here, the local police have identified the rape-murder victim.

Amritsar police commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh, who visited the scene of the crime on Monday morning, said; "Thanks to the cops' efforts, a family came forward to identify the deceased." The victim was a resident of Verka village in Amritsar district.

"We have major leads about the prime suspect and a manhunt is on," Aulakh added. The police also talked to area residents on Monday.

The body of the woman, around 25 years old, had been recovered from an abandoned, unfinished building on Sunday. She was raped and then strangled to death.
