In a bid to help the hearing and speech impaired contact the police without inconvenience, the local police have started a SMS helpline for them.

Brainchild of Ludhiana police commissioner Ishwar Singh, the service was thought of when the commissioner realised that the hearing- and speech-impaired residents faced a lot of hardship while filing a complaint even after personally visiting the police station.

According to a statement released by the commissioner's office, any complaint sent through a text message on mobile number 7837-018-500 would be taken care of immediately.

The phone number has been assigned exclusively for redressing the complaints of residents who can otherwise not report a problem through a telephone due to disability.

The release stated that the incharge of control room would act immediately on receiving a text message on the given mobile number.

“The incharge of the control room will further inform the station house incharge concerned of the particular area from where the complaint has been reported,” stated the official statement.

“The SHO concerned would be required to take action on the given complaint immediately,” the statement further read.

The police commissioner has appealed to city residents to avail of the service.
