Patiala police have nabbed 489 drug peddlers in its special drive against narcotics launched since May 1. The figure is almost double than that of last year.
Giving details, Ishwar Singh, inspector general, said Patiala police's drive against the drug traffickers had achieved a great success.
He said that last year, 232 cases were registered under the NDPS Act in which 273 people were found in possession of 91kg of opium, 7,507 kg of poppy husk, 3 kg of smack, 9 kg of sulfa, 255 gm heroin, 22 kg of intoxicant powder/chemical, 10 litre of intoxicant liquid, and 21,408 intoxicant capsules/tablets.
Meanwhile, in 2013, 409 cases were registered and 489 people were arrested since May, and 44 kg of opium, 4,069 kg of poppy husk, 13 kg of smack, 1 kg of ganja, 5 kg charas, 38 kg of intoxicant powder, 12 lakh intoxicant capsules, 14,079 intoxicant injections, 888 bottles of intoxicating medicine, 30 gm bhang, 970 gm sulfa, and 10 gm heroin were recovered from them. The drive against these elements would continue in the future, he added.
He lauded the role of SSP Hardial Singh Mann in the crusade against drug peddlers.
