The city police used force to disperse teachers employed under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) and centrally sponsored scheme (CSS). They were protesting outside the residence of urban bodies minister, Chunni Lal Bhagat, on Saturday.

Teachers from Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr and Taran Tarn wanted to submit a memorandum to the minister. They demanded regularisation of their service and an appointment with CM Parkash Singh Badal.

However, the minister was not at home. His son, Mohinder Bhagat, tried to pacify the protestors. When the protesters tried to cross the barricades put up by police, the latter used force to disperse them. The clothes of some of the teachers were torn.

The union representatives said that the state government was backtracking from its commitment to regularise their services. They plan to stage a protest outside the house of education minister Sikandar Singh Maluka, on May 27.

ACP (west) RPS Sandhu, said that the police "had to use mild force" to control the protesters outside the minister's house.
