A self-proclaimed political leader has been arrested for allegedly repeatedly raping the daughter of one of his friends.
Kishan Lal Sharma, who told the police that he is the chief of the Purvanchal Nav-nirman Sena political party and also the Punjab president of the Jammu-based National Panthers Party, has been sent to two-day police remand along with a female accomplice, Rani.
The 19-year-old complainant told the police that on February 15 Sharma, her father's friend, took her out on the pretext of offering her a treat at an eatery, but took her to an isolated spot at Jamalpur and raped her in the car.
She said her father, a doctor by profession, was out of town when the alleged incident took place.
The complainant further told the police that Sharma warned her of dire consequences if she spoke about the incident to anyone and then raped her many a time again when her parents were not home, while Rani allegedly watched.
Assistant sub-inspector Manjit Singh told HT that the duo was arrested on Monday and that further investigation is on.
Police said Sharma helped the girl's father around two years ago when a patient whom the doctor was treating died.
The deceased's parents raised hue and cry and had lodged a complaint against the doctor. It was with Sharma's help that the matter was resolved and the alleged rape victim's father left free, making the two men close friends.
