Punjab government schools in the district witnessed thin attendance of students on Tuesday as most of the teachers were busy in election duty. In most of the schools, half the number of total students did not turn up.
The government has declared a holiday on July 3 on account of the panchayat election. "In view of the election, parents stopped their wards from going to school. They know that not many teachers will be present in schools. When teachers are absent from school, what's the point of coming," a teacher working in a local government school said.
Ashok Kumar, a Class-12 student in a local government school, said he preferred to study at home. "Though schools opened on July 1 after the summer break, I will go to school after the election," he said.
Officials of the education department admitted that the election might have been the reason behind low attendance in schools.
