The city residents are making the most of the special rakhi envelopes being provided by the postal department these days. Besides, the department is also providing various rakhis and special gifts at its post offices.
According to the department, the rakhi envelopes being sent overseas include many destined for Pakistan.
SP Pahwa, senior postmaster, head post office, Bharat Nagar Chowk, said five to seven rakhi envelopes are being sent to Pakistan from Ludhiana on daily basis. There are several people who have their relatives residing in Pakistan, for whom they have been sending rakhis. It is worth mentioning here that the relations between the two countries are soured.
According to the officials of the postal department, the parcels and envelopes they receive daily for dispatch within the country is 700 to 800 in numbers, whereas around 150 envelopes and parcels are being received destined for overseas.
The employees of the post office state that they are providing all the rakhi special material to the customers at lower than market rates. They claim their products are of fine quality as these are being brought from Meerut, Saharanpur and New Delhi.
The officials claimed that rakhi gifts and other related articles have been put on sale at the post office from Thursday and they have so far sold the aforesaid items worth `12,000. Stationery sets, bags, and other latest gift items have been made available at the post offices.
SP Pahwa said, "We have established three rakhi counters at different post offices in the city which include Rajguru Nagar, Model Town and Central post office situated at Bhadhaur House on Saturday. We are getting very good response from the residents."
Suresh Kumar, superintendent, Ludhiana post office, has set up all the rakhi extension counters at different locations in the city.
Cartoon themed rakhis
Special cartoon rakhis with lights for kids have been trending upwards. Rakhis themed Chota Bheem, Doraemon, Mickey, Batman, Angry Bird and Minions are in great demand, which are available at the post offices in the city.
