Power woes: For 25 days, 6 Chandigarh sectors to face erratic supply

The reason, the transformer of the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) that was damaged on Thursday is unlikely to be replaced before 25 days. The transformer, in the vicinity of the Transport Chowk, supplies 12MW power to this part of the city.

UT electricity department superintending engineer MP Singh said, “The BBMB transformer has been damaged and we will take another 25 days to procure a new one. These are power transformers and are not easily available. We are trying to arrange the equipment from Punjab and Haryana.”

In these sectors, now power is snapped at frequent intervals with no electricity for hours, even during the night. Low voltage is also an issue which means that most appliances are not working.

Low voltage in Southern sectors

The situation was no different in some of the southern sectors with 37, 23, 38 west, 39 beset with the problem of low voltage.

MP Singh added, “The problem is Southern sectors is due to supply problem from SAS Nagar. From SAS Nagar instead of 66KV supply, Chandigarh gets 61 KV and there is some problem with the northern grid.”

Sectors facing unannounced cuts

Sectors which have been facing unannounced power cuts are 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 25, 27, 28, 29, 37, 38, 40, 41, 43, 45, 48, 49, 51, 52 and some colonies.

The problem

A power transformer at grid substation, BBMB Industrial Area, was damaged on June 23. Till now, load fed from this transformer is being managed by shifting to another transformer/ grid substation. Efforts are being made by BBMB in arranging a new power transformer from Punjab/Haryana.

Rotational power cuts due to transformer damage

Till the damaged transformer is replaced, need-based rotational power cuts will be imposed in parts of Sectors 27, 28,19, Bapudham Colony, Police Colony,

Grain Market, Timber Market and Institutional Area of Sector 26, Shastri Nagar, MHC, Railway Colony, Kalagram, Raipur village, Vikas Nagar, parts of Manimajra, Tubewell number 4, Rajiv Vihar, Uppal Housing Complex, Mauli Complex, Industrial Area Phase-1 (in some parts) will be imposed.
