A subdivisional officer (SDO) in Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) was kidnapped on Friday morning from his office at Rangian village in Sangrur district.

Police confirmed the kidnapping of Dharampal Singh, who has partial disability. "His family claims to have received a ransom call from an unknown mobile-phone number," said senior superintendent of police Mandeep Singh Sidhu.

Police claim to have gathered from the SDO's colleagues that they had last seen him in the office around 11.30am, shortly after which, his car was seen parked outside the office. His mobile phone was switched off. "A search and rescue operation is on," said SSP Sidhu, not disclosing how much ransom was sought.

Inputs to police suggest that Baldev Singh, a clerk in the SDO's office, called Dharampal Singh on Friday morning to get his signatures on some documents, following which, they agreed to meet near Dhuri.

"Baldev has told us that Dharampal Singh left him waiting near Dhuri and drove on talking over mobile phone," said Sidhu.

An accident some time ago had the SDO disabled partially. He had the additional charge of Bhalwan power-grid office. "Police are working on different theories," said the SSP.
