The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) conducted surprise checks on 27 dyeing industries of Ludhiana during the past 3 days to check various compliances of the effluent treatment plant and their operation after giving a facilitation service to all the 236 small scale dyeing industries of Ludhiana.

During the surprise checks effluent samples of these industries were collected to check the adequacy of their treatment plants. It is noted that some units are still not adhering to the pollution laws.

Ravinder Singh, chairman of the board said on various platforms the representatives of the dyeing association of Ludhiana requested the board to act as a facilitator and to guide them regarding improvements to be made in their pollution control systems so that they may be able to comply with the pollution control norms.

The board conceding their request constituted of 10 teams in June 2013 to visit all the 236 small scale industries of Ludhiana door to door and to convey them about the discrepancies.

After completing this process and giving the industries adequate time to upgrade and remove the discrepancies in their pollution control devices, the board surprisingly checked 27 industries during the last three days under the supervision of senior environmental engineer by constituting seven teams and it was surprising to note that a few industries have shown interest in upgrading their systems.

The chairman said this attitude of the dyeing industries need to be changed to comply with the pollution control norms. He further said the law would take its own course, if any industry was found violating the norms.
