Riled by the presence of illegal structures in the ward represented by Amritsar mayor Bakshi Ram Arora, the People's Party of Punjab (PPP) on Saturday urged him to initiate action against the erringg owners within a month, failing which the PPP workers would gherao the municipal corporation leader.

PPP leader Sandy Randhawa alleged that there were several illegal buildings in the ward of Arora, but no action had been initiated against their owners. "Several commercial establishments are functioning from residential areas of Arora's ward in contravention of rules," he added.

PPP district president Manmohan Singh Gumtala said that the party had lodged a complaint with authorities in this regard. "In response, the party received a communiqué in which Amritsar municipal commissioner acknowledged such commercial activity in several localities of the city," said Gumtala. He added that the letter went on to say that the MC would conduct a survey in this regard and respond within 15 days.

On the other hand, Arora denied these allegations and urged the PPP leaders to pinpoint as to which commercial establishment was operating illegally in his ward.

"Instead of making wild allegations, they should pinpoint the commercial establishments that are operating in my ward illegally. The MC will investigate and take strict action against officials concerned found guilty of allowing such commercial buildings to come up," he asserted.
