A new train, Guru Parikarma Express, which will run between Amritsar, Patna and Nanded, was announced for Amritsar in the railway budget on Wednesday. The train has brought cheers to frequent commuters on this route.
Athletes and sports lovers have welcomed the decision to institute the Rail Khel Rattan Award. The new train will also increase the inflow of devotees to the city, which is important from the point of view of religious tourism and trade.
However, some residents termed the announcement as a “political compromise”. SGPC secretary Dalmegh Singh said though there was already a train running between Amritsar and Nanded, the additional train would prove to be beneficial for tourists and pilgrims.
Dr Joginder Singh, head, Naamdhaari Chair, Guru Nanak Dev University, said the introduction of the new train was a “political ploy”. Apart from the new train for Amritsar, modernisation and beautification plans have been chalked out for the railway station here, under which an elevator will be installed and two new platforms will be constructed.
