Whether 15 years in politics have made her shrewd or it is her persona, but despite being a royal bahu, Preneet Kaur behaves like a commoner. As she campaigns for the Patiala Urban bypoll, she highlights her family's connection with Patiala and her husband Captain Amarinder Singh's role in the development of the city.
The defeat in the last Lok Sabha election has taught her that offence is the best form of defence.
This time, instead of listing her and the Congress's achievements, she attacks the SAD-BJP government while interacting with voters during contact programmes, which are usually nukkad rallies or door-to-door campaign.
She tells a nukkad rally at Ragho Majra, "It's time to punish the SAD-BJP government, which has made your city a slum. When Maharaja saab (Amarinder) was the chief minister, the city had the best civic amenities. In the past eight years, the SAD-BJP government has ruined it. They diverted all funds from Patiala to Bathinda."
By saying this, she tries to undo the damage done by the "non-performer" tag given to her by the SAD and the Aam Aadmi Party. She also tries to highlight that she brought the funds to Patiala but they were diverted to Bathinda.
She slams the SAD government for the poor civic conditions in the city —a major issue in the bypoll.
As she enters a locality, she says, "Look, it's stinking here. Garbage is lying everywhere, sewage is flowing in the open. How do you people live in these conditions? Thank God there is no outbreak of a disease." This sparks the anger in residents for the civic body, and Preneet capitalises on it saying, "Let's punish the SAD-BJP misrule and script a new era of development by winning the seat.
We will regain power in the state in 2017 and Patiala will once again be a top city of Punjab." Following this, people, especially women, raise slogans in her favour.
As the word spreads that Preneet is out campaigning in the area, women gather to see her. Preneet shakes hands with women, hugs them and even dances with them in these Teej times. She also does not forget to highlight the bond of the royal family with the city and the work done by Amarinder as CM.
As Amarinder was in Amritsar during the Lok Sabha polls, this time, she is truly banking on her husband’s charisma to pull this off. And Amarinder is firing on all cylinders to ensure her victory.
