punjab Updated: Mar 02, 2013 17:19 IST

Minister of state for external affairs Preneet Kaur has expressed her gratitude to railway minister Pawan Bansal and finance minister P Chidambaram for giving due place to Patiala in their respective budget speeches this year, a statement said on Saturday.

The railways minister while presenting the Railway Budget on February 26 had promised a traffic survey to be undertaken for laying new Patiala-Jakhal railway line, which would cater to a large section of the population of Patran, Shutrana and Samana areas of Patiala district. A new weekly Express train is also to be started between Bathinda and Jammu Tawi via Patiala, Rajpura which would immensely facilitate pilgrims travelling to Vaishno Devi.

"These were long standing demands of the people of my constituency, which are expected to materialise soon, for which I express my sincere thanks to Pawan Bansal," said Kaur.

Kaur also hailed the other projects announced by Bansal, which included electrification of
Rajpura-Dhuri-Lehra Mohabbat railway track running via Patiala which is to be taken up as new project in 2013-14; survey for doubling Rajpura-Bathinda via Dhuri line; and survey of Rajpura to avoid reversal.

She said "these measures are expected to ease railway travel through Patiala to a great extent. I am also grateful to Chidambaram, who has given National Institute of Sports Coaching at NIS Patiala, a new project worth Rs 250 crore aimed at training coaches for budding sportsmen and women in different fields," the minister of state for external affairs added.

NIS Patiala had been doing pretty well in the field of sports and had a tremendous scope for further upgradation and development, she informed.

Kaur has been taking up the issue of the overall development of the Patiala constituency at various levels in different Union ministries.

In continuation of this effort, she had recently led a delegation of prominent citizens including MLAs and ex-MLAs, from all segments of her constituency and had a long
discussion with the railway minister over a variety of issues, including proposed Patiala-Jakhal rail link, re-routing of some trains through Patiala and stoppage of some express trains at Rajpura.

It was due to the persistent efforts of Kaur that several projects have been brought to Patiala. "A road over-bridge over the railway line in DMW area of Patiala town is also in the pipeline whereupon the work would start soon," she further informed.
