Union minister for state for external affairs Preneet Kaur on Wednesday visited the Badshahpur rape-cum-suicide victim's family. She was accompanied by a battery of Congressmen, including PPCC vice-president Lal Singh, MLAs Sadhu Singh Dharmsot, Balbir Sidhu, Hardial Kamboj and local Congress leader Nirmal Singh Shutrana.

After the visit, Preneet demanded a probe into the role of local SAD-BJP leaders in the crime. "Everyone knows that police stations in the state are being controlled by local politicians. SAD-BJP MLAs or so-called halqa incharge appoint the SHOs and later dictates terms to them. Thus, there is need to probe why the police delayed proceedings and on whose behest?" said Preneet.

Preneet said anti-social elements were being patronised by the Akalis and incidents like murder of an ASI in Amritsar, beating of an AIG in Ludhiana, slapping of policemen were examples of deteriorating law and order in the state. "With law and order becoming from bad to worse, common man is living in an atmosphere of fear," She said, while urging chief minister Parkash Singh Badal to rein in the bad elements.

Interestingly, the district administration allegedly tried to sabotage the visit of Preneet Kaur, as they called the victim's father, mother and sister to Patiala. Preneet could only meet one of sisters of the victim.

However, Akali Dal attacked Preneet for visiting the family so late. Rural development minister Surjeet Singh Rakhra said her visit was politically motivated and there was no sign of sympathy.

"10 days after the suicide, the MP finally got time to visit Badshahpur. She is doing only politics. All the accused in the case have been arrested, the SHO and ASI have been dismissed, a special investigation team is probing the role of others and government job has been provided to a member of the victim family. So, Preneet is here to score some brownie points and to show her presence in the constituency," said Rakhra.

He advised Preneet not to politicise the issue and instead give her suggestions in Delhi to frame a stricter laws against rape.
