Presiding officer, polling agent injured in acid attack

A presiding officer besides two polling agents received burn injuries when some people threw acid on them besides damaging ballot papers at a village in Mallanwala town of Ferozepur district.

As per information, two factions of ruling Akali Dal were contesting against each other at Basti Kishan Singh village under Mallanwala police station.

At 3.30pm, few people who were earlier doing 'water service' at polling booths, entered polling room while carrying a container and threw acid on ballot box which also fell on presiding officer Labh Singh, three polling agents Sarabjit Singh, Santokh and Harpreet Singh and ballot papers were also burnt.

Police probe was going while the accused had been identified and a case will be registered against them, said Varinder Pal Singh, SSP, Ferozepur.

Poll had been countermand at Basti Kishan Singh and re-polling would take place accordingly. At Shahwala village in Zira sub-division, polling was cancelled following wrong printing, said Ferozepur deputy commissioner Manjit Singh Narang.

At Ghatti Rajo Kee village, polling and counting was done peacefully but later on the nominee who trailed by 200 votes, arrived at polling booth with some accomplices and fled away with ballot boxes and ballot papers, added the DC.

In a scuffle at Kilianwali village under Abohar sub-division of Fazilka district, three persons sustained injuries during an attack with sharp edged weapons. A probe has begun.

In Ferozepur district, 80% polling was reported till filing of the news for the elections to 616 panchayats while 205 had already been unanimously elected.

At a few polling booths, polling was on till very late evening due to heavy rush of electorate.

In Fazilka district, 90% polling was reported for 399 panchayts at 642 polling booths. As many as 35 sarpanches and 759 members of panchayat had already been elected unanimously in Fazilka. Out of total 2,711 wards, polling was held for 1,952 wards for which 1,640 were in fray to get elected as sarpanches and 5,012 as members of panchayat.
