A 19-year-old priest allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at a temple in Peeru Banda area of Salem Tabri in the wee hours of Tuesday.

The Salem Tabri police sent the body to civil hospital for autopsy. The deceased has been identified as Satinder Tiwari.

Hailing from Sitamarhi of Bihar, Satinder was working as a priest in Shivala Mandir at Peeru Banda since May 20. Earlier he was a priest in Parshuram Mandir in Civil Lines area.

According to inspector Dharampal, station house officer (SHO) at Salem Tabri police station, Ajay Tiwari, cousin brother of the deceased, used to take care of prayers and other rituals in the temple. However, he had to go to Sitamarhi a few days ago to attend a marriage, and therefore appointed Satinder to take care of prayers and rituals on his behalf.

The SHO said a devotee, who came to pay obeisance at the shrine in the wee hours of Tuesday, witnessed the priest hanging from a hook when he went looking for him. The devotee raised an alarm and alerted locals and police.

“No suicide note has been recovered from the room. The reason behind his extreme step has not been ascertained yet,” said the SHO.
