The Batala police on Monday claimed to have arrested the prime accused in the Fatehgarh Churian double murder case who allegedly murdered his aunt and cousin at their residence on the night of June 15 and fled away with cash and jewellery.
The police also recovered Rs 3.48 lakh, gold ornaments weighing 300 gm, a motorcycle, the weapon used in the crime and a mobile which was purchased with the robbed money.
Adressing a press conference here, Batala SSP Vikrampal Singh Bhatti said that on the morning of June 16, they got information that some unidentified miscreants reportedly hacked to death a woman and her son with sharp-edged weapons while they were sleeping in their house at Bagh Wali Gali at Fatehgarh Churian town.
The SSP said that during initial investigations, the police found that deceased’s husband, Iqbal Singh, who was running an electronics shop in the town, had gone to meet his sister at Jagadhari in Haryana and his wife Malkiat Kaur (50) and son Lovepreet Singh (17) were at home when they were attacked by armed robbers.
During further investigations, the police found that on the night of June 15, the deceased Lovepreet Singh was found drinking juice with his cousin, Kuljeet Singh alias Sunny, a resident of village Khehra, and his companion Lovepreet alias Love, a resident of Mohan Bhandarian village.
Police raided Sunny’s residence but he was absconding but they managed to trace Love, who confessed that he, along with Sunny, killed the mother-son duo and fled away with cash and jewellery.
After getting a tip-off that Sunny was seen moving around Bhalowali village, a police team, headed by Fatehgarh Churian SHO Rajesh Kakkar, laid a trap and arrested Sunny while he was boarding a bus for his village.
In his confession, Sunny told that he along with his friend Love went to Lovepreet’s shop at Fatehgarh Churrian and when the deceased closed his shop, they made him drink a juice laced with sleeping pills.
“Later, I went to Lovepreet’s house, where I made my aunt Malkiat Kaur drink milk, which was too laced with sleeping pills. Around 12.30 am when both of them became unconscious, I called Love, who was already waiting outside the house, and we killed the mother-son duo with sharp-edged weapons and fled away with gold ornaments and cash lying in the house” he confessed.
On June 17, both Sunny and Love went to Amritsar where Love bought a new mobile phone worth Rs 25,000 from the robbed money and Sunny left with the remaining cash and the jewellery.
