A 25-year-old prisoner allegedly committed suicide in the district jail by hanging himself from the roof on Friday.

The prisoner has been identified as Balwinder Singh of Patti village. Jail superintendent Ajmer Singh Rana said Balwinder was put in judicial custody on December 2.

He and his younger brother Ram Tirath had been sentenced three-year imprisonment in a case under Section 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt).

A shocked Tirath said his brother was under stress following the sentence and feared social stigma.

Balwinder strangulated himself with a cloth around 11am in the under construction building of canteen.
He was immediately referred to the civil hospital but the doctors declared him brought dead. The body was handed over to the kin after the post mortem. The superintendent said he was not in the jail when the incident occurred and also denied security lapse.
