A prisoner who was serving life term at the city central jail for killing his wife, committed suicide on Monday morning by hanging self with a sash in jail's bathroom.
The deceased Kamaljeet Singh, 37, a resident of village Khamanchu, Banga, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, had been in the jail since last one year.
Fellow prisoners on seeing his lifeless body hanging with the skylight's grill, informed the jail officials who alerted the police division number 7. The police have sent Singh's dead body to Civil Hospital for postmortem.
The Banga police had booked Singh on January 7 last year for killing his wife, after which he was lodged in Ludhiana central jail. The court awarded him life imprisonment on January 15 this year. Kamaljeet Singh is said to have been mentally disturbed after being convicted.
Superintendent of Ludhiana central jail SP Khanna said, "Kamaljeet Singh had gone to the bathroom to bathe. He hanged himself on to the skylight's grills with his sash that he used to tie on his head."
On August 12 last year, 59-year-old resident of Dasuha Surjit Singh, who was serving life term for killing, had committed suicide by hanging self with the grill of the bathroom casement. He was mentally disturbed.
Saddam Hussain, a 28-year-old man from village Mailon of Sahnewal, who was booked for several offences including attempt to murder, rash driving and forgery, had committed suicide in Ludhiana central jail by hanging self on April 26 last year. He was depressed as one of his neighbors used to tease his wife. The police had registered a case of abetment to suicide.
