Seven students of Guru Hargobind Public School, Usman Shahid, got injured when the bus they were travelling in overturned near Saidowal village in Dasuya on Thursday.
The injured were rushed to the local civil hospital. Akashdeep got his leg fractured while Gurmukh Singh and Surajdeep sustained injuries on their heads. Surajdeep was referred to a private hospital in Jalandhar.
Students alleged that the driver was driving recklessly and was even talking over his cell phone. While taking a turn, he lost control as a result of which the bus skidded off the road and overturned, they added. Driver Jagdeep Singh fled from the spot but the police later nabbed him and registered a case of negligent driving against him. He claimed that the accident occurred due to slush on the road.
Panic-stricken parents rushed to the hospital on learning about the mishap. Assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Dhruv Dahia and sub-divisional magistrate Barjinder Singh visited the spot and ensured that the injured get immediate first-aid at the civil hospital. Dahia said all educational institutions in the subdivision had been issued fresh guidelines on traffic rules.
"We will conduct random checking of school buses and any driver found defying rules will be dealt with strictly,” he said.
After the incident, when he set out to check other buses, he caught many bus drivers driving without a seat belts, he further said.
School principal Davinder Kaur claimed that all drivers were given instructions to drive safely and all four school buses were fitted with speed governors. “I will ask them to be more cautious in future,” she added.
