Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra arrived here on Sunday to inspect her cottage, being built at Chharabra village, 15km from the state capital Shimla.
Located amid thick forests of pine and cedar, the cottage, coming up on 1.4 acres of land at a height of more than 8,000 feet, is close to The Retreat, the summer holiday resort of the President of India.
Late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi would also live at The Retreat whenever he visited Shimla. Sources said soon after arriving in Shimla, Priyanka straightaway drove to the construction site along with Shimla district (rural) Congress president Kehar Singh Khachi.
Priyanka’s visit comes three weeks after Sonia Gandhi visited Chharabra to inspect the construction.
Priyanka bought the land in 20117 for around `47 lakh. The market value of the property is `5.2 crore now.
The then Himachal Pradesh government had relaxed norms under Section 118 of the Land Reforms and Tenancy Act to facilitate the sale.
The law prohibits outsiders from buying land in the hilly state and those who wish to buy land for non-agricultural purposes have to seek a relaxation from the government.
Priyanka, who last visited the site on August 7, had three years ago asked the builder to raze the old cottage building on the land and use newer designs. Sources said Priyanka wanted the cottage to be designed in accordance with the "vastu shastra".
Priyanka is putting up in a private accommodation - Aanand cottage - at Mashobra and will be staying till Tuesday.
