The Punjab and Haryana high court on Saturday issued a notice on a petition challenging the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) decision to revoke the screening orders of Punjabi film ‘The Mastermind Jindha Sukha’.

The petitioner, a Sangrur resident, Darshan Singh, who is also producer of the movie, said the film was cleared for public viewing on July 24 by CBFC after effecting some cuts. But on September 9, the certificate given was revoked. “No new material had come on record for revoking of the certificate granted to the petitioner. It was done by CBFC on the instructions of the Centre,” petitioner’s counsel Ranjan Lakhanpal has alleged, arguing that the order of revocation was passed due to “whims and fancies” of the central government.

The film portrays the story of Sukha and Jindha, who were sentenced to death for murdering Gen AS Vaidya, who headed Operation Bluestar.

“During their custody, they wrote letters to their family members. They owned the offence committed by them and that they were hanged. The movie is based upon letters written by them. It is the life story of Sukha and Jindha,” Lakhanpal said.

The single judge bench of justice HS Sidhu has sought various parties’ response, including that of the Centre, CBFC and Punjab by October 1.
