Forest minister Surjit Kumar Jyani on Friday laid the foundation stone of a special project worth Rs 1.4 crore at Sadqui, a joint check post on the Indo-Pak border located 15km from Fazilka.

It is the only spot in the region to which people from the two countries come on August 15 every year and interact with one another without crossing the boundary. Besides, a large number of people come here daily to witness the retreat ceremony.

The project includes upgrading the visitors' gallery, memorial gate and conference hall besides making elaborate arrangements for parking.

Jyani was accompanied by Fazilka deputy commissioner Basant Garg and BSF DIG AK Sharma.

Speaking on the occasion, Jyani said they were committed to the development of Fazilka and in future more efforts would be initiated to further develop the area as a tourist spot.
