Property dealer shoots wife, self in Sahnewal

Following a brief argument, a property dealer shot dead his wife at their house in Nandpur village of Sahnewal on Friday morning. The woman was preparing tea in the kitchen when the accused opened fire at her with his licensed revolver.

After killing his wife, the accused sent his children to the kitchen to see their mother and in the meanwhile, he shot himself in the head.

The deceased have been identified as Navdeep Singh alias Sonu (38) and his wife Jaswinder Kaur alias Baby (36).

Seeing their parents’ dead, the children raised the alarm and people gathered at the spot and informed the police.

The Sahnewal police reached the spot and sent the bodies to the civil hospital for post-mortem examination. The police have also confiscated the revolver and have registered a murder case against the property dealer.

According to police, Sonu was depressed over slump in the real estate business. He had invested all his capital in the real estate.

Sonu and his wife had gone to attend a ‘prabhat pheri’ (morning procession) in the village on Friday. After returning, Sonu asked his wife to prepare tea for him. Meanwhile, the couple entered in an argument over some issue.

When Jaswinder was preparing tea, Sonu took his gun and shot her twice in her back following which she fell on the ground and died. After hearing the gunshots, their children Simran, 14, and Sukhmandeep Singh, 10, woke up and came out of the room to know the matter. Sonu sent them to the kitchen to see their mother and went inside the room, where he shot himself in the head. He too died on the spot.

Inspector Anil Bhanot, station house officer (SHO) of the Sahnewal police station, said the police were investigating in the matter to know the reason of Sonu taking the extreme step.

He further added that the police had registered a case of murder against the property dealer in the matter.
