Several members of the Dalit community from Kauni village in Muktsar district have accused a senior leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) to deprive them of the about 5-kanal common land of the village, which they have been using to dump garbage and fuel wood.

"The space is being used by more than 70 households and some of the people have build a thatched roof there to sit on the benches. Some people from the village object to it without any reason and, on Sunday, they started demolishing the wall of the common land which was built by the panchayat," alleged Narinder Singh and Pal Singh, Youth Congress workers from the village.

The issue got politicised on Sunday when Congress MLA from Giddarbaha Amarinder Singh Raja Warring also extended support to the Dalits saying that the Akalis are doing it because those people are the supporters of the Congress.

"A ruling party leader today tried to demolish the wall of the common land which is in possession of the economically backward people of the village. But, this is an arbitrary action, which would not be tolerated at any cost," said Amarinder Singh Raja Warring.

"I am lead a group of the affected people to meet the senior superintendent of police on Monday," added the MLA.
