Activists of the Brick Kiln Workers Union and Construction Workers Union on Saturday staged a protest against the hike in power tariff and “black marketing” of sand in Punjab.
Addressing the protesters, district secretary of the Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU) and former MLA Tarsem Singh Jodha said the Punjab government had dealt a cruel blow to the people of the State, who were already reeling under the rise in prices of essential commodities. By hiking tariff, the government had “rubbed salt on the wounds” of the people, he said.
In addition, he said, flawed auction of mining sites in the State had led to monopolisation of the trade which in turn was affecting prices of sand in the marked in a wrong way. Due to the prevailing situation, lakhs of workers associated with the construction industry in Punjab were left jobless, he added.
Jodha alleged that owing to deliberately created situation some business houses in the State were minting money.
