Sportspersons and sports lovers across the city gathered at the Guru Nanak Stadium on Tuesday evening to protest against columnist Shobhaa De’s controversial tweet on Rio Olympics.

Shobhaa had tweeted, “Goal of Team India at the Olympics: Rio jao. Selfies lo. Khaali haat wapas aao. What a waste of money and opportunity.”

Sports lovers said she demoralised the spirit of Indian Olympians.

Punjab Basketball Association general secretary Teja Singh Dhaliwal said players and their coach burn midnight oil and face several hurdles to reach the Olympics. “It is unacceptable that a person sitting at home is passing immature statements,”he said.

Athletic coach Sanjiv Sharma and SS Pannu said it is the time to encourage players participating in Rio Olympics. Such insulting comments can break their spirit. “Winning a sport depends on performance as well as luck. If a player has not won a medal, it doesn’t mean that he didn’t practice or give his best performance. Everyone is trying their best to achieve gold,”they articulated.

A sports lover Brij Bhushan Goyal said Shobhaa De has insulted the players.

She should feel sorry for the same otherwise our protest will spill to the streets.
