Different social and farmer organisations joined the relatives of Karamjit Kaur of Hirdpur village of Patiala district, who was allegedly burnt to death by her in-laws, on Tuesday to stage a dharna in front of the Mini Secretariat seeking the arrest of all the accused.

The protesters accused the local police of protecting the accused and delaying the arrest. "Though a special team has been formed by the police to look into the case, the investigations are going on at a snail's pace, as only one accused has been arrested till now," said Darshan Pal, a Bhartiya Kisan Union (Dakaunda) leader.

Following a complaint by Bakhshiwal village resident Sardara Singh, Kherhi Gandian police station had registered an FIR against five of his daughter's in-laws' family for burning her to death over dowry.

After the arrest of the main accused Jagdish Singh, the police had formed an SIT to ascertain the role of others in the case. According to the FIR, Sardara's daughter Karamjit Kaur was married to Jagdish Singh in 2008, but the entire family tortured her for dowry.

Police had registered a case against Jagdish Singh, his brother Harjeet Singh, mother Shamsher Kaur, sister Jhain and father Bawa Singh under sections 304-B and 198-A of IPC.
The agitators have threatened to gherao the police station if the accused were not arrested soon.
