Members of the Youth Sewa Society started a chain hunger strike near the statues of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev at the Jagraon Bridge to mark their protest against the central government for not providing the status of martyrs to them.

According to the society, on the first day of the strike, Bhupinderjit Singh, president, sat on the strike.
He said, "We request the central government to declare these freedom fighters as martyrs. Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev sacrificed their life for the country. However, it is ironical that our government does not value their sacrifice."

He also urged the government to declare a gazetted holiday as mark of the respect for them. He added, "Our protest would continue will our demand is met. Every day, each one of us will sit on the strike and protest against the government."Meanwhile, other organisations also supported the strike.
