The police resorted to a lathichage on Punjab Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) employees here on Thursday.

The employees, working on contract basis with the PRTC, from different parts of the state, had reached here to protest against the policies of the state government.

Earlier in the day, the administration also arranged a meeting between union leaders and deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, which did not prove fruitful.

Furious union members gathered at the under- construction Diwan Hall of Takht Damdama where the police had made them to stay. When the meeting with Sukhbir failed, they wanted to come out.
But the police resorted to a lathicharge on them to stop their march on the road. Police reportedly chased PRTC workers inside the Takht Damdma Sahib. It also terrorised devotees at the Takht.

Later, Partap Singh Bajwa, president, PPCC, reached met the union members and condemned the lathicharge on them.

While addressing the employees, he extended full support to their demand. He demanded that the outsourcing system should be completely abolished.

He said that Badals are hell bent on inflicting slow death to the government-owned transport system so that their family transport business of ORBIT Transport can completely monopolise transport system in Punjab.
