Employees including Junior Engineers (JEs) of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) and Punjab State Power Transmission Limited (PSTCL) observed a complete strike on Thursday.
Operations of both the utilities were paralysed in Patiala, Sangrur, SAS Nagar, Barnala, Bathinda, Mukatsar, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Tarn Taran. The members of other unions including PSEB employees Joint Forum also joined the protest.
The agitators, under the banner of Council of Junior Engineers PSEB, raised slogans against the state government and the Powercom management for no action to implement their demands.
Union general secretary Er Davinder Singh said that despite repeated requests, the management has failed to the release of arrears from past many months. Moreover, the authorities did not bother to restore parity in their pay scales in spite of the fact that state government had revised the pay scales of their counterparts in November 2011.
He added said though the state government had already enhanced the promotion quota of some employees, but the management was deliberately not increasing the promotion quota for JEs and assistant engineers.
The council leadership also criticized the PSTCL for making separate recruitments in violation of tripartite agreement.
Davinder Singh added that the threw as no IAS officer in the present management and that was delaying decisions.
The council leadership has sought the intervention of chief minister Parkash Singh Badal to appoint at least one IAS officer in the management of the utilities. The agitators also threatened to intensify their protest if the management failed to meet their demands at the earliest.
