The Panjab University Extension Library (PUEL) Ludhiana has begun implementing the computerised bar-code system. After successfully installing the bar code printer /reader and SLIM21 software, the library now plans to start issuing books electronically.

In a press note issued on Thursday, Deepak Kapur, director of the library, said the new system would be more student friendly, as it would save over 75% of time vis-a-vis the manual system.

Kapur said all 1.75 lakh books in the library would soon be brought under the new system wherein all major activities namely acquisition, cataloguing, circulation, and serial number control would be computerised.

With the computerisation of the catalogue of books and journals, to form the WEB OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue), library users would be able to refer to the OPAC as and when needed and search for the required information, said CP Choudhary, assistant librarian.

Choudhary said library members would also be able to look for lists of latest books and periodicals added to the library. A member can also request for a book to be procured by the library through the Web OPAC.
