Two youths, including a Panjab University student, were killed and two of their friends injured when their Chevrolet Beat car collided with a Himachal Roadways bus at the Old Panchkula light point on the Zirakpur-Shimla highway on Sunday night.
The deceased have been identified as Ritesh, a PU student, and his friend Anuj, a resident of Jind. They died on the spot.
The injured, Amit, and Simran, also a PU student and resident of Chandigarh, were rushed to hospital. While Amit was taken to the PGI, Chandigarh, Simran, who suffered injuries to the head, was being treated at the General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula.
The youths, in their early twenties, were headed to Shimla. Police said the Himachal Roadways bus, which was coming from Shimla, had been impounded.
“The bus driver is absconding. We will meet the girl (Simran) to record her statement,” Sector-7 police post in-charge said.
A case under Sections 279 (rash driving) and 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered. The police are investigating the case.
Some empty bottles of cough syrup were found near the car, the police said, adding that it was not clear if they belonged to the four youths.
