Tension prevailed in Rattan Singh Chowk area of the city after a clash between local residents and police in the wee hours of Friday. Residents indulged in stone-pelting after an ASI opened fire.

The area remained closed to traffic till late afternoon on Friday as policemen were deployed all over the place.

The clashed occurred over some argument when residents were giving 'thikri pehra' to prevent rising incidents of theft.

Amritsar police commissioner RP Mittal visited the area in the evening and talked to residents.

"We have talked to the people and assured them that their problem will be resolved. We will also look into why the ASI in question opened fire," said Mittal.
