The multi-processing plant set up by the Punjab Agro Industries Corporation Ltd at Jahan Khelan village has started processing of tomatoes for Cremica brand.

Bhushan Goyal, chief executive officer of the facility, said the plant would crush 10,000 tonnes of tomatoes this season.

Punjab Agro Industries managing director KS Pannu said several companies, including Hindustan Levers, Pagro Foods, Del Monte, Capricorn and Mother Dairy, would utilise the processing facility in the coming days.

"After the contractual assignment, we will process about 500 tonnes of tomatoes at Jahan Khelan and Abohar plants for direct marketing at Punjab Agro's outlets. Then we have a contract for pear processing," Pannu informed.

The processing units, which were set up by Punjab Agri Juices Limited in 2007 at a cost of Rs 50 crore each, remained non-functional for about five years and the government had almost decided to sell them. In February this year, the two plants crushed about 2500 tonnes of kinnows.

"We will not shut down the units but rather upgrade them," said Pannu, adding that the government was keen to promote agro processing industry.
