Within 36 hours of a two-year-old boy’s mysterious death at Dera Bassi, police on Tuesday arrested his father for the murder on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.
What has come to the fore is a chilling account of a man’s perverted mindset. The accused, who hails from Muzaffarnagar in UP, stayed and worked at a farm in Mahi Wala village near Dera Bassi.
His wife, with whom he also has four daughters, is pregnant. Police said after reaching his house in a drunken state late on Sunday evening, he tried to get intimate with his wife, but she spurned his advances.
Agitated, he took his two-year-old son to the fields, where he allegedly sodomised him. Later, he returned home and told his wife that their son got lost. The couple went out to look for him, and found him lying unconscious in the fields. The child was rushed to the Dera Bassi civil hospital, from where he was referred to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh.
After administering first aid, the doctors referred the baby to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Research and Education (PGIMER), where he was declared brought dead.
Sketchy statement made cops suspicious
During interrogation, police got suspicious as the father gave a sketchy statement. He told the police that he found his son missing from the bed around 11.30pm. He said upon searching for him, he and his wife saw a man in his early 30s hitting their son on the ground. “On seeing us, the man fled,” the father had alleged.
Dera Bassi station house officer (SHO) Gurpreet Singh Bains said the child had no external injuries, putting a question mark on the father’s claim that he was hit on the ground. Police said the postmortem report, too, confirmed the child was sodomised.
On putting pressure on him, the man confessed to the crime. His wife, however, is still in shock and has not given any statement. “We have found enough evidence to nail the father, on the basis of which he was booked and arrested,” said the Mohali senior superintendent of police (SSP) Kuldeep Singh Chahal.
The father has been booked under Sections 302 (murder) and 377 (unnatural offences) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
