Punjab minister for medical education and research Brahm Mohindra said on Friday that he sensed bungling of money in purchase of expensive, advanced medical equipment in the tenure of the SAD-BJP government for medical colleges and hospitals of the state.

Speaking on the sidelines of a public function in Patiala on Friday, Mohindra said the SAD-BJP government had purchased “many foreign-made, expensive equipment without any proper criteria and recommendations from technical experts and doctors in the last two years of its tenure”.

“Most of the machinery purchased and installed in the hospitals and medical colleges during that time remains unused till date as there were no proper technicians available to run these,” he added.

“The only motive behind purchase of such worthless and dubious machinery is to bungle funds and make commissions out of it,” Mohindra alleged.

The minister added that the officials of his ministry have been asked to carry out “minute audit” of the purchases.

“Moreover, it will be investigated that whether there was need to purchase the equipment at all,” Mohindra said.
