Nurturing sportspersons is not an easy task as it requires proper infrastructure and state-of-the-art coaching. Ace cricketer Harbhajan Singh on Friday said Punjab lacked basic sports infrastructure and had failed to produce sportspersons who can bring laurels to the state.

He was in the city to launch the Jalandhar Panthers team, which is one of the five teams that are going to be a part of ‘Box cricket league-Punjab’. The league is Punjab’s first ever unisex celebrity cricket show.

“Punjab has no dearth of talent but lacks sports infrastructure,” said Harbhajan.

He was accompanied by Jalandhar Panthers’ captain Gurpreet Ghuggi and other members, including Navraj Hans and singer Master Saleem.

Harbhajan further said, “T he lea gue also aims to divert the minds of the youth from wrongdoings like intake of drugs and will encourage them to channel their energy for excelling in sports.”

The youth should only know one addiction, that is sports,” Bhajji added.

Harbhajan also said he had submitted a proposal to the state government to establish a university which would prepare sportspersons and coaches for future, but no one paid heed to it.

“I do not know why the government has not done anything yet. I have requested for setting up such a university of sports many times but nothing has been done yet,” said Harbhajan.

Team captain, Gur preet Ghuggi, on being asked how he would manage cricket and politics at the same time, he replied, “I will be able to give equal importance to both, as both are equally important for me.”

Interestingly, Bhajji denied having any plans to join politics.

Chandigarhiye Yankies, Royal Patialvi, Ludhianvi Tigers and Ambarsariye Hawks are other teams in the league.
