Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh says that in the 2017 Punjab elections, his followers will support the candidates who submit a written affidavit to fight social evils.

Addressing the media near the sect’s headquarters here on Sunday during a tree-plantation programme on his birthday, he said the dera will shame the politicians who came to it last elections but failed to fulfil their promise of doing good work.

The dera head offered to support the government in social work. Asked to specify, he said Haryana was going to set a big tree-plantation target to mark its 50 years on November 1 and the dera would like to be of help in that. “The dera followers have planted more than 40-lakh tree saplings across the world,” he said. “Most of the saplings planted on Sunday were of fruit and medicinal trees.”

On the disappointing performance of Indian players in the 2016 Rio Olympics, he said the country’s sports originations should be in the hands of former players, not politicians, and talent scouts should be sent to villages.

On his upcoming movie, “The Lion Heart”, he said it was the story of a warrior’s saving the planet from aliens, and he had a double role in it.
